Essential Gear for Beach Fishing in Singapore

Before beginning your beach fishing adventure, you'll need the proper gear:

  • Fishing Rod & Reel: A medium-action rod from 7 to 9 feet is recommended. You can pair it with a Shimano spinning reel size 1000 to 4000.
  • Fishing Line: Match the correct size of line according to the reel of your choice. Your reel will come with instructions of the line size to use, which is usually between P.E 1 to 2.5 braided line for strength and sensitivity.
  • Lures: Lures are always our recommended go-to. You can cover more ground and search for the fish. For beginners, Small jigs between 7 to 40 grams work well. Small soft plastics between 1.5 to 3 inches match with 5 to 21-gram jig head work well. The rule is to match the weight with the depth of the water. If the water is 1-3 meters deep, use 10 grams or less. 3-10 meters deep, use 10 – 30 grams.

Beginner-Friendly Techniques

• Start by casting short distances and get used to your gear before progressing to casting further. Learn your equipment; that is the first step for any beginner.

Cast It out. Use a steady lift and fall technique. Feel your lure touch the bottom, Wind in the slack line, lift the rod tip, and let it touch the bottom again. Then keep repeating until your lure is almost back and you can start again.

  • Always check the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) and National Parks Board (NParks) websites for updates on designated fishing areas.
  • Fishing licenses are generally not required, but some coastal zones have restrictions or prohibited species. Abide by these rules if applicable.
  • Respect the environment by avoiding litter and releasing undersized or protected fish back into the water.
