A Beginner's Guide to Trevally Fishing in Singapore

on

There are many species of Trevallies in Singapore waters. They represent an important group of fish commonly caught by anglers. The most common species that can be caught from Singapore shores is the Diamond Trevally and Golden Trevally which regularly come into waters less than 1 meter in depth to feed. They love sandy bottom with a bit of small rocks and shells.

Long Fin Trevally, Big Eye Trevally, and Giant Trevally are more often encountered fishing on a boat in reef current heads and over reef edges.

Trevally fishing in Singapore presents an exciting challenge for beginner anglers seeking to experience the thrill of reeling in one of the region's most agile saltwater fish. Known for their strength and speed, trevally make a rewarding catch when approached with the proper techniques and equipment.

Understanding Trevally

Trevallies behaviour varies between species. Golden and Diamond trevallies tend to feed by digging through sand and mud bottom to flush out small creatures in hiding, but they will aggressively chase down and attack bait fish if there is a chance. The other species of trevallies are mostly fast-swimming, aggressive predators found around reefs, in coastal waters, and near shipwrecks off the coast of Singapore. They feed on smaller fish and are attracted to shiny lures that mimic baitfish.

Choosing the Right Location

These fast swimmers can typically be found in these locations:

  • Coastal areas like East Coast Park, Changi, and Lazarus Island are prime spots. You can also try to charter a boat or join a weekend group out to sea and learn from the pros. You can come into Lure Haven, speak with us, and we will point you in the right direction.
  • Look for structures such as reefs or submerged rocks where trevally hide. Understand the tides and current. Trevally fish never stops swimming. They need a lot of oxygen so stronger currents are better for Trevally fishing.
  • Early mornings and late afternoons increase your chances, as trevally are most active during these times.

Essential Saltwater Fishing Tackle Singapore

To reel in your first giant trevally, you need the right saltwater fishing tackle in Singapore:

  • Rod & Reel: Light to Medium outfits. A Shimano 3000 spinning reel matched to a light 6-foot jigging rod is the most common beginner setup in Singapore.
  • Line: Use a good Japanese brand braided line around P.E 1.5 test for smoothness and strength.
  • Lures: Metal jigs are generally the most effective for Trevally fishing.
  • Hooks & Leaders: Strong assist hooks with fluorocarbon leaders are standard.

Techniques for Success

Even with the right equipment, you’ll still have a hard time fishing for your first trevally. Follow proper techniques and best practices for better results:

  • You can either slow hop your jig off the bottom or jig them back halfway and repeat again. On shore, cast out and hop back the jig in different directions, walk around, and explore your grounds. On a boat, drop to the bottom and jig the bottom 5 meters and repeat. Vary the speed of each try to find out the speed that they want.
  • Trevally are strong fish. Be ready for sudden, powerful runs; keep steady pressure without snapping your line. Set your drag just moderately tight.

Trevally fishing in Singapore is a thrilling pursuit that combines technique, patience, and quality saltwater fishing tackle.

With this guide, beginner anglers are well-equipped to enjoy a successful and rewarding fishing experience in the island’s vibrant waters. Happy fishing!
